ULCC - Kerala Labour Cooperative will make you more proud than AMUL!!! ULCC owns IT Special Economic Zone, ULCC turnover has been growing at 30% annually for the last three years, total worth of the Society would be more than Rs 10 billion!!
Kerala cyber park to be first in world by a cooperative society

Donning a white dhoti and a khadi shirt, 55-year-old Ramesan is the president of Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS). The largest labour cooperative in Asia, a diversified business organisation with an annual turnover of Rs 400 crore, is set to open Kerala’s third cyber park–the first in the world by a labour cooperative–in December .
His question is not just a formality; there is a reason behind it. It is related to the origin of the Society more than 90 years ago, when a group of low caste labourers of a small village in northern Malabar, Uralungal, organised themselves with a capital of just 37 paise, as per the guidance of Vagbhadananda, a social reformer of northern Kerala, to get out of starvation, poverty and feudel oppression.
“The primary aim of the cooperative back then, and for a long time, was to get food for every member. Wage was secondary,” Ramesan says in his northern Malabar Malayalam. Filling stomachs is still a part of their legacy, as reflected in the question he had just asked.
Today, the total worth of the Society would be more than Rs 10 billion. It undertakes multi-crore projects that include highways, bridges and flyovers across the state. It has eight business subsidiaries consisting technology solutions (software), affordable housing, urban planning and sustainability, agro-farms and a craft village, among others. The turnover has been growing at 30% annually for the last three years.
The 2.7 million square feet UL Cyber Park is the first IT Special Economic Zone in the Malabar region and is expected to generate about 40,000 direct employment opportunities. The UL Technology Solution, the software arm of the Society, that started with just four people in 2012, now has more than 60 permanent and 40 temporary employees and has been growing at 50% since then, now reaching a turnover of Rs 25 crore.

ULCCS is centered around laboureres who manage it from top to bottom and usually start their membership as masons or breaking road metal. The average earning of workers at the Society is about 40% higher than their counterparts. Once a member, they are entitled to Provident Fund, insurance, gratuity, interest-free loans and many other benefits. They rise ranks over the years and some like Ramesan go on to lead the organisation that now employs around 3,000 workers directly and 6,000 indirectly.
TP Kunjikkannan, a noted economist in Kerala, cites ULCCS as a successful example of social entrepreneurship, where unlike capitalistic business model, wealth created is shared equally by every member. “Thus, each member, starting from an ordinary mason at the lower level to the director board, is equally responsible for its progress and success.”
In Kerala, a state often blamed for highly politicised and troubled labourers, it is a wonder that this labour cooperative hasn’t ever seen a single day of labour unrest, he adds.
“We are, of the workers, by the workers and for the workers,” says S Shaju, the secretary of ULCCS. The state government has given the Society an accredited agency status because of the timeliness and quality of work so that it can directly get work without going through a tender.

And this is one of the secrets of their success, says Ramesan: “Our model is simple. You treat the workers well and pay them well, and they work well with commitment. And you are able to produce quality work, able to finish it much before the time and make profit out of the time and cost savings.”
He highlights the discipline and lack of political interferences as other reasons. “We may have our own political affiliations but we never allow that get into functioning of the Society. You may find fierce competition in the Society elections held every five years. But that just starts there and ends there too.”
“If someone shows indiscipline, we punish them, no matter even if he is a director,” Anandan says. A usual punishment is sending a person to a quarry, to break road metal.
The Society entered its high growth stage after the beginning of the millennium, when the number and money involved in the infrastructure projects in the State saw a high growth. “Big projects start coming up from government,” Ramesan says.
Facing labour shortage, the Society started acquiring heavy machinery to reduce it dependence on labour and began modernisation and diversification to other areas that included the ULTS and now the IT Park. “We saw that a transition is required if we are to attract the new generation to the Society.”
The United Nations has endorsed ULCCS as a unique sustainable rural development model for creating employment in multiple business areas with a social perspective.
In September 2014, the UN invited the Society to Europe, the birth place of the cooperative movement. “We were very small compared to the size of many cooperatives there, who were employing high technology, some even making robots,” says Shaju.
“But still they were impressed at our growth rate, and our diversification. And we found that we have been on the right track,” says Ramesan with a confident smile.

CUDDALORE: It’s raining woes for Cuddalore district, with the worst
affected being Visur village near Panruti. Ten houses have been razed
and another 50 damaged badly as it poured heavily. Last Monday, the
entire village was flooded as water rose up to 7 ft.
The village, located on either side of Pappan Vellavari canal, got flooded after an unexpected breach caused by the heavy downpour. Entire agricultural lands of the village got covered with layers of red soil brought by the floods. Many residents lost their cattle and chicken to flood. People also lost their belongings such as money, jewels, land documents, ration cards and other important papers to flood. Students lost their books and laptops.
The agony of the village residents is such that all they need immediately is adequate compensation from the government.
Affected people have been taking shelter in the government school building, where food packets are being distributed to them.
Jothilakshmi, a resident of the village, was seen carrying a newly-bought stove in one hand and food served by the government in another.
“I went to the nearby Senthanadu to buy this new kerosene stove. This is to prepare coffee or tea for my family. As my house was entirely damaged in the floods, I have to use this stove now,” she said.
Jothilakshmi lost two of her close relatives to the calamity.
Another rain-affected, Palaniammal pointed to a spot and said that her house was situated there before the floods ravaged. “The sudden floods took away my house. You cannot even find wreckages there. Everything has gone with the water,” she said, with tears welling in her eyes.
Ramya (21), a seven-month pregnant woman, underwent untold suffering when the flood water enveloped the village. “There was hip-deep water in my house. As the water level increased, I moved to another house in my street. Again, I had to move to the terrace of a building, where I waited for several hours with fear.”
Krishnaveni (19) and her uncle Vivekanandan were seen cleaning their house filled with plenty of red soil. “We have been removing the soil for the past four days. But still we have not finished the work. From this, one could imagine the amount of soil settled in our house,” Krishnaveni said.
“People cannot live in damaged houses. So they have to demolish those houses and reconstruct new ones. Many newly built houses were also destroyed by the flood,” another resident Amutha said.

BEWARE: Date rape drugs available freely !!!
Date rape drugs, which include Rohypnol, Ketamine and GHB, have
been used to spike people's drinks to incapacitate and render them vulnerable
to sexual assault.
Mixed with the victims’ food or drink, the “date rape drug” can
throw her into a haze, detached from all bodily sensations. It comes cheap at
Rs 30 a gram and passes through the body quickly, making later detection
difficult.
The police say the past two years have seen a spurt in seizures
of ketamine, the drug most widely used by Indian rapists and known on the
streets as Kid Rock, Ket Kat, Make-Her-Mine or, simply, K.
While gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Ecstasy and Rohypnol too are
considered date rape drugs — some of them sold under the names Easy Lay, Scoop
Her, or Forget It — ketamine is “popular” because it is legal and cheap.
“People
should avoid drinking with strangers, never leave their drink unattended, and
have a trusted driver. Date rape drugs leave little evidence, that’s why there
is no definitive record of how many women fall prey to them,” an officer said.

Rules for party
To protect yourself while at a party always make your own drink. If you are in a bar, never take your eyes off the bartender while he/she is making your drink. - http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/11/1/aung-san-suu-kyi-rally-draws-thousands-in-myanmar.htmlCan you evade breast cancer? Can men get it? Common myths associated with breast cancer!! Signs to watch out for!! Were do Indian women stand ? - from TOI
Can you evade breast cancer?
While some factors are beyond our control, Dr. Neelesh Reddy, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Columbia Asia Hospitals points out five healthy lifestyle habits that can help lower breast cancer risk.
Maintain a healthy weight: Overweight or obese women are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than leaner women. This is because fat cells release substances including estrogen, which can stimulate cell growth and breast cancer. Regular exercise can also go a long way in improving your body's metabolism and controlling weight.
Give up red meat: Studies have found that the risk of developing breast cancer is more with the increasing amounts of red meat. According to statistics, for every additional daily serving of red meat, the risk of breast cancer increases by 13% and by 54% in women consuming oral contraceptive pills. Instead, one can opt for fish. The Omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients from fish help lower breast cancer risk.
Cut back on booze and avoid smoking: Avoiding alcohol is as important as losing weight. It has been proven that more alcohol you drink, greater you are at a risk of developing breast cancer. However, if you choose to drink alcohol — including beer, wine or liquor — try to limit yourself to no more than one - two drink/week. It has also been proven that smoking leads to increase in breast cancer. Also, since smoking is an important risk factor for cancer in general, it only makes sense to avoid it. Women who drink an average of 2 alcoholic beverages per day increase their breast cancer risk by 21%.
Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy: Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you're taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options. You may be able to manage your symptoms with non-hormonal therapies, such as physical activity.
Eat healthy and include fibers in your diet: Whether it comes from fruits, veggies or whole grains, fiber is good for breast health. Embrace a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugared drinks, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods. Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation, if at all. Eat whole grains. Choose vegetable oils over animal fats. Studies have found as much as a 5% reduction in breast cancer risk per every 10 grams of fiber added to a woman's diet per day.
Avoid delaying motherhood: Women who delay having their first child until later in life or who never have children are at a higher risk for breast cancer. In contrast, having children at a younger age and breastfeeding decrease the risk of developing breast cancer
Is your bra responsible for breast cancer?
According to the American Cancer Society, there is no evidence that compression of the lymph nodes by bras causes breast cancer. "In reality, body fluids travel up and into the underarm lymph nodes, not towards the underwire. It was believed by many that underwired bras cause compression of lymphnodes and increase chances of breast cancer. Similarly, there is no sufficient evidence that any type of bra cause breast cancer. If the lady is overweight with large breasts, then the weight is a cause which can increase her risk of breast cancer but not the underwired bra she is wearing. It would make sense that women with larger breasts are both more likely to wear underwire bras and more likely to develop breast cancer. But this doesn't mean that underwire bras cause breast cancer," opines Dr Anuradha Kapur, Lead consultant and Head of Unit, Max Super Specialty hospital, Saket.
