Can you evade breast cancer? Can men get it? Common myths associated with breast cancer!! Signs to watch out for!! Were do Indian women stand ? - from TOI
Can you evade breast cancer?
While some factors are beyond our control, Dr. Neelesh Reddy, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Columbia Asia Hospitals points out five healthy lifestyle habits that can help lower breast cancer risk.
Maintain a healthy weight: Overweight or obese women are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than leaner women. This is because fat cells release substances including estrogen, which can stimulate cell growth and breast cancer. Regular exercise can also go a long way in improving your body's metabolism and controlling weight.
Give up red meat: Studies have found that the risk of developing breast cancer is more with the increasing amounts of red meat. According to statistics, for every additional daily serving of red meat, the risk of breast cancer increases by 13% and by 54% in women consuming oral contraceptive pills. Instead, one can opt for fish. The Omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients from fish help lower breast cancer risk.
Cut back on booze and avoid smoking: Avoiding alcohol is as important as losing weight. It has been proven that more alcohol you drink, greater you are at a risk of developing breast cancer. However, if you choose to drink alcohol — including beer, wine or liquor — try to limit yourself to no more than one - two drink/week. It has also been proven that smoking leads to increase in breast cancer. Also, since smoking is an important risk factor for cancer in general, it only makes sense to avoid it. Women who drink an average of 2 alcoholic beverages per day increase their breast cancer risk by 21%.
Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy: Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you're taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options. You may be able to manage your symptoms with non-hormonal therapies, such as physical activity.
Eat healthy and include fibers in your diet: Whether it comes from fruits, veggies or whole grains, fiber is good for breast health. Embrace a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugared drinks, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods. Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation, if at all. Eat whole grains. Choose vegetable oils over animal fats. Studies have found as much as a 5% reduction in breast cancer risk per every 10 grams of fiber added to a woman's diet per day.
Avoid delaying motherhood: Women who delay having their first child until later in life or who never have children are at a higher risk for breast cancer. In contrast, having children at a younger age and breastfeeding decrease the risk of developing breast cancer
Is your bra responsible for breast cancer?
According to the American Cancer Society, there is no evidence that compression of the lymph nodes by bras causes breast cancer. "In reality, body fluids travel up and into the underarm lymph nodes, not towards the underwire. It was believed by many that underwired bras cause compression of lymphnodes and increase chances of breast cancer. Similarly, there is no sufficient evidence that any type of bra cause breast cancer. If the lady is overweight with large breasts, then the weight is a cause which can increase her risk of breast cancer but not the underwired bra she is wearing. It would make sense that women with larger breasts are both more likely to wear underwire bras and more likely to develop breast cancer. But this doesn't mean that underwire bras cause breast cancer," opines Dr Anuradha Kapur, Lead consultant and Head of Unit, Max Super Specialty hospital, Saket.

Sunita Narain on status of Indian Agriculture today ....
Sunita Narain on status of Indian Agriculture today ....
1. we need to invest big time in weather sciences/ 25-30 per cent reduction was done in last yr annual budget...
2. prices are artificially "fixed"; and when shortages grow, government rushes to buy from heavily subsidised global farms. This cannot go on...
3....everything from cities and roads to ports and dams - must be built in a way that they are compliant with best environmental safeguards.
4.....our so-called crop insurance schemes are poorly designed and even more poorly executed. Once again, this cannot go on.

My experiences at 6th Convocation of Jamsetji Tata National Virtual Academy Fellowships, MSSRF, Chennai (1st to 4th December 2009)
My experiences at 6th Convocation of Jamsetji Tata National Virtual Academy Fellowships, MSSRF, Chennai (1st to 4th December 2009)
I got a call from MSSRF’s Project Coordinator and Director about me participating in the NVA Induction and Convocation as Facilitator on 30th, I readily accepted the same.
Day 1- 1st December 2009:
I reached MSSRF, Chennai along with my friend Sadayappan who is also an IAS aspirant like me. We met the Project Coordinator and Director. We were asked to attend a 2 day training programme on Facilitation and Rapporteuring.
The first day training was conducted by an Assistant Professor from Anna University. Rapporteuring training on the first day helped both of us in improving our understanding about listening, notes taking and report writing. We also had practical sessions. We felt if we had had this class before main exam it would had been great.
Day 2- 2nd December 2009:
On the second day we had introduction to concept of fellowship under JNT-NVA. We were also instructed on the facilitation of the 1 day induction programme for the new NVA fellows. It was fun as the induction programme itself had lot of games like ice breaking session, balloon balancing and web of thread etc.
Day 3- 3rd December 2009:
I was allocated with 5 others as Facilitator for 56 new NVA fellows from Tamil Nadu under Social Welfare and Awareness category. We first welcomed them gave a PPT presentation on the concept of NVA fellowship, roles and responsibility.
I administered the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalams oath for NVA Fellows. It mentioned that one has to educate at least 5 children for 3 years, plant 5 fruit bearing tree, harvest rain in a village pond, drop at least one family dispute or court case for familial amity, be honest and not to take bribe, treat male and girl child as equal while providing education etc and not to take drugs or alcohol.
After that we used various interviewing technique to find out
Their unique aspect which helped them in getting the fellowship
The List of organisations or individual which helped them in getting the fellowship
Methods they are currently using for collection and dissemination of content and capacity building
Challenges and gap in their tasks
The things they are expecting from JNT-NVA and its Training school
Individual future plan
And finally updated their profile
I met various men and women from various walks of life, for example…
Mr.Ezhilan a fisherman from Thoothukudi was very serious about saving sea environment, corals, sea turtles for the future generation, his sincerity made me emotionally charged up
Mr.Arumuga Pandiyan had lots of knowledge about various traditional herbs and wanted help to further his study on plants and herbs, he had the Childs enthusiasm for innovation
Mr.Chandrasekar a 27 year old youth wanted to empower and guide youth of his taluk through education and capacity building, he wanted to know about NREGA’s Social Audit etc
75 year old tribesman Andi wanted to establish a government teacher trainng school in his tribal village, his earlier efforts in educating his tribesman has helped a ward to become an IAS officer
Palpandian is also called as Birdman as he and his wife has dedicated their life for conserving birds and bird’s habitat in forests of Thirunelveli.
Balamugundan a youth leader from Karaikal wanted to make his village alcohol free
Selvakumari was a orthopedically handicapped who was helping fellow handicapped people to rise up in their life. She wanted to expand her garment export business.
Kumudha a SHG leader wanted to take possession of the Women Activity Center building allocated for SHG’s by the government from the male dominated Panchayats control.
If I remember right Vijaya, Anburaj, Sundaramurthy and one more women came forward to lead some of the discussions.
There was serious effort from Women to convey their displeasure over male domination in the society
Sundaramurthy was for a surprise when he came to know that all Panchayats in Tamil Nadu has a Library, but it was not so in Puducherry U.T.
Former Leprosy patient and Muslim women Ujala Begum was very determined in expanding her already successful SHG groups to Scheduled Caste section of her village. Really she will spread her inner Ujala to others further
At end of the session I realized that....
if they all could do so much without proper know how, how much I can do for the society with my present knowledge.
I saw a raw courage in them in fighting for social justice, which I have to develop further consciously.
If we could help them to develop their leadership skills and provide details about their duties and entitlements, they could quicken the silent revolution they are already leading for long.
I could see immense creativity and ability to innovate in them all.
Even when facing heavy odd, they have withstood their alone to realize their dream, which mostly are too big for them
Day 4: 4th December 2009
We typed out reports on the Induction programme we conducted the previous day. I also coordinated to prepare a speech on behalf all fellows of Social Welfare and awareness group. It was finally delivered by a fellow from Andhra in Telugu. It listed all the activities they did and their outcome.

National Youth Assembly
Against Violence and Terror
The biggest challenge the country faces today is from widespread violence and terror. Folowing this the Indian society is fast becoming increasingly intolerant and violent. It is a known fact by being indifferent or merely condemning it, violence will not disappear. Nor can combating this menace be left to the government alone. Should not the citizens reflect on appropriate strategies and creative initiatives to reign in these monsters who have dug their feet very deep and have assumed ominous proportion capable enough to threaten the very existence of our nation?
As responsible citizens, what should then be our response? The civil society, especially the youth, should be brought in to the forefront of any effort towards Peace-buildings, Peace-making and Peace-keeping initiatives.
Background and build-up
For the past five years, through a series of activities, the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies has been engaged in a National Campaign for a "Violence-Free India" – HimsaMukt Bharat. The more significant and important activities undertaken in different parts of India during this period include:
Ø A three month-long campaign to enlist 100,000 families to nonviolence.
Ø Youth Camps in Universities and Colleges in 17 States on the problem of violence.
Ø Essay and elocution competitions for school children on "violence and its adverse impact."
Ø Peace Padayatras and discussions on violence in several places.
Ø 110 Lectures/Seminars as part of the observance and commemoration of the Centenary of "Satyagraha" started by Gandhiji and the "UN Decade of Nonviolence and Culture of Peace" (2001-2010) in the context of the growing menace of violence and terror in India and abroad.
Ø Campaign for establishing a Department/Ministry of Peace in the Government of India to exclusively pursue, promote, cultivate, build and cherish Peace.
Ø Set up "Shanti Kendras" (Peace Cells) in schools and other educational institutions to inculcate among children the values of tolerance, understanding and respect for each other, and to train them how to deal with differences, disputes and conflicts.
Ø Two National Conferences: "An India Without Hunger and Violence" at IGNOU (2007), and two, on "Challenges from Violence and Terror – Methods and Strategies to Counter Them" at Anuvrat Bhavan, New Delhi (2008). They were attended by social and peace activists, youth leaders, Gandhian constructive workers, tribal leaders, women activists, legal luminaries, academics, Spiritual leaders and Media experts.
Ø Twelve regional seminars in different parts of India on citizen’s role in compacting Violence and Terror.
Ø Twenty-four youth interactive sections of three day each on the Problem of Terror and Violence.
Ø Twenty Youth camps on Nonviolent conflict management through Gandhi’s Shanti Sena
Ø 186 Youth Assemblies held in different parts of India during the last two years to sensitize the youth against extremism, violence and terror.
What is the National Youth Assembly?
As a sequel to the national campaign through these 186 of Youth Assemblies held in different parts of the country during the last two years, we now propose to organize a National Youth Assembly against Violence and Terror, dedicated to the sacred memory of former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi – a martyr for harmony, tolerance and unity – in New Delhi during the ‘Quami Ekta Week’ on 21 November 2009.
Theme and objectives
The main theme of the National Assembly is Youth Against Violence and Terror. This national event will focus attention on the specific role the youth of India can play in both understanding the gravity and nature of extremism, violence and terror the country is facing now, and encourage them to reflect on the role each one of them may play back in their places of study, work or activities.
The aim, in short, is to encourage them to reflect and help take initiatives at individual, local and institutional levels, so that each one will become a partner in promoting harmony, reconciliation, peace and development. This is also to remind the youth of India that in a crisis, instead of remaining silent or indifferent, they have a special positive role to play.
Objectives:
The objectives of the National Youth Assembly are:
a
To sensitize the youth that intolerance, extremism, violence and terror are against the Indian ethos and culture, and the youth should avoid them and become aware that they disrupt and impede development and national progress.
a
To drive home the point that combating violence and terror cannot be left to the government alone and that the Civil Society, especially the youth, too has a major role in augmenting the efforts of the government in fighting violence and terror.
a
To organize various educational programs in schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions to prepare the students and youth to reflect and develop appropriate strategies to fight these two evils.
a
To revive and re-launch Gandhiji’s Shanti Sena and create a National Standing Body of Young Peace Volunteers (Shanti Sainiks), who will promote and maintain peace and harmony in the community in their respective places. And for this purpose, prepare a National Register of Peace Volunteers (Shanti Sainiks).
Launching of Shanti Sena
Realizing that every youth of India has a great role to play in ensuring harmony, peace and goodwill among various segments of our population and more so the youth since it is they who are most affected, it is imperative that we create a conducive atmosphere for development, which will offer them opportunities of employment leading to peace and happiness. The proposed National Youth Assembly dedicated to Sri Rajiv Gandhi will be an appropriate occasion to launch Shanti Sena of Mahatma Gandhi’s conception to promote peace and harmony in society. The participants in the National Youth Assembly will constitute the first batch of Shanti Sainiks/ Peace Volunteers. Soon thereafter, we will launch a nationwide campaign to enroll more and more Shanti Sainiks/Peace Volunteers.
We are confident that these young Shanti Sainiks/Peace Volunteers working in the villages and towns of India as agents of peace, harmony and unity will be a revolutionary step and this will also be a fitting tribute to the memory of Sri Rajiv Gandhi to whom harmony and unity were integral to development.
Participants
The Youth Assembly will be attended by over 700 youth leaders representing all the States as well as a wide spectrum of youth activities in different parts of India and will therefore be a very significant event.

India: Celebrate and Cerebrate
India is changing every second. In many areas we are progressing well and in many other we are losing out, The mood, self confidence and morale of the people – aam admi fluctuated according to the development that takes place around them, As media especially electronic media has profound impact on the people, it projects more of our shortcomings in our society and plays down some of our silent but significant achievement. To garner high TRP ratings they focus on trivial or mundane aspects rather than important issues.
In order to provide confidence and right orientation to aam admi, especially aam youth, media should project those aspects which will give confidence and which will give open personal challenge to youth. It has to not only celebrate success in T20 World cup cricket, but also on successful test of cryogenic engine, Agni III, success of ISRO, young inventors, young entrepreneur, CSIR awardees, Civilian and Military award winners, young collectors, successful young political leaders who didn’t have a great parent to launch oneself and so forth.
Even when showing saddening news or social evil, media should challenge the people, ask them what they individually will do to remove them. It can be Nithari killing, Kidney racket, Sarojini Nagar bomb blast, bird flu attack or climate change. Rather than simply blaming babudom and neta’s, it has to ask the people recognize their personal responsibility and also to take up their cause with babus’s and neta’s.
NCC,NSS, Green Corps, Nehru Yuva Kendra, SPICMACAY ,Scouts and similar other organization and students union should utilize their collective being to project the major achievement of our fellow Indians and also to educate the people about their responsibility towards social and national issue. They can organize little celebration alter India’s or Indian’s achievement equivalent to T20 Victory celebration. Similarly they can organize mourning for every soldier who dies fighting against terrorism, violence against dalit or tribal brethren, for every sister who faces eve teasing or rape…
As of today our media and youth organization can built up cheer group for
* Chandrayan I mission launch, similar to one china organizes for its launch
* Support Indian delegation to WTO and celebrate their victory there for our Indian farmers
* Indian Beijing Olympic contingent’s success
* All women Police contingent to Liberia
* Passage of women reservation bill, lokpal bill etc
* And many more
Enlightened social and political leaders should provide vision and direction to Indian media and youth. They have to boost up morale of Indian people. Have to wake them up to present day problems we face. Once people, especially youth‘s energy is kindled success can only be the result! Common India!!

Gandhi's Satyagraha: Solution to our current problems
Satyagraha has simple logic and simple method. It is what we practice with our spouse, children, close relatives and friends every day. When they deviate from what we feel is correct or best,
* we persuade them to understand our view or opinion,
* we educate them,
* we listen to them to understand their view,
* we put across our arguments in a constructive way,
* we protest by blocking them proceed in a wrong way in order to save them,
* we suffer in order to convince them
* we may sometime show anger but not to harm them
* we seek a win-win solution.....
This is what satyagarha is to my understanding in a micro level or at family level. When the same is applied to in a large scale by group of people against another set of people's thought and action it is satyagraha at political level. The basic underlying factor here is 'Love for the opponent and self and for welfare of both'. This only gives the nature and tone to Satyagraha. Only when a person understands the collective good in a demand, he/she will accept it and this is what the task of an satyagrahai has to accomplish by make the other understand.
Now let me list down some of our current problem....
Within India:
* Naxal Violence
* Regionalism in places like Assam, Maharashtra
* Ineffective Implementation of NREGA, RTI etc
* Environmental degradation in various regions
* Violence against Women, unborn girl child, children in general
* Violence against minorities and many more
Across the globe
* Sectarian violence in Srilanka
* Protest for democracy in Pakistan, Myanmar
* East Timor unrest
* Kenyan post poll violence
* Maoist, Madhesi violence in Nepal
* Palestinian problem
* Darfur crisis in Sudan
* Climate Change solutions negotiation
and similar strife around the world..
The issues listed here range from economic to religious and ethnic origin. Each one of them is unique and looks tough to solve satisfactorily for both the parties. But here the point we need to focus is when we can solve this problem we all can live happily.
Here to solve them we need patience, belief in other party, multilateral facilitation, common accepted norm for negotiations and sincere leadership. Steps in this regard can be
* Protest for democracy in Pakistan, Myanmar
* East Timor unrest
* Kenyan post poll violence
* Maoist, Madhesi violence in Nepal
* Palestinian problem
* Darfur crisis in Sudan
* Climate Change solutions negotiation
and similar strife around the world..

Here to solve them we need patience, belief in other party, multilateral facilitation, common accepted norm for negotiations and sincere leadership. Steps in this regard can be
* Analysis of the issue in an objective manner by both parties to under stand the root of the problem
* Considering benefits that will accrue to both the parties by accommodation of both parties demand
* Building up support for a accommodative solution, by serious campaign using latest available communication means, individual level door to door campaign, and use of individual sacrifice to convey ones sincerity
* Using necessary force to nullify the armed rebels in order to protect civilian casualties
* Assuring amnesty for armed rebels for acceptance of popular consensus
* Implementation of the plan of resolution under strict supervision of bi-party team of leaders
* Maintenance of the peace and amity through permanent channels of communication
Though the above steps may look general this the essence of the approach that need to be taken in order to solve the present day issues we are facing. If we fail to solve some of the issues of today and leave it for future generation to solve, it can be too late for future generation to exist itself!
